Taking the lesson outside the classroom.
This is why I have this website, this is why Columbia's DPT Program is so great. We had PT PRocedures Lab on Monday morning, and this time we did transfers from the wheelchair to Professor Kolodny's (salty) car. This was a very fun and informative session for all of us. This type of "hands-on" learning is very beneficial to us students and gives us a reason to get outside for a cup of coffee during class. (Ask Mary about that one...)
Initially Dr. Sliwinski and Professor Kolodny discussed and demonstrated 2-man and 3-man carries. Travis is always a willing volunteer!
3-man carry (Professor Kolodney, Dr. Sliwinski and Alicia)
Prepping for the 2-man carry to the wheelchair
Travis enjoying the ride (nice face!)
On our way to Professor Kolodny's car! It's cold out here...
Demo of transfer in/out of the front seat
Imee trying to get me out of the chair by yelling at me (not very effective..)
I barely (by less than 1") fit into the back seat of the car
Julie tries to do a floor to wheelchair transfer without using her legs at all. It's hard!
Listening to the lecture from Dr. Sliwinski
Toni and Sarah helping Mary transfer to a wheelchair
Imee and Alicia discussing transfer techniques
This class was really awesome! I hope we get to do more of this stuff throughout the rest of the semester.
See you next post!
